Sunday: Spencer Tunick’s installation at The Big Chill
August 8th, 2010 by sparky
Now here’s something you don’t see every Sunday Morning. Hundreds of nude men and women, all shapes and sizes, both old and young decked head to toe in coloured body paint.
It was, of course, the latest living masterpiece from Spencer Tunick. The Big Chill 2010 now sits alongside venues like the Sydney Opera House, The Sage and locations as far flung as Barcelona and Mexico City as inspiration for the artist’s work.
At just after 9 a.m. the view from the ground was of a mass pile of rejected clothing dotted over the hill. Just round the corner was Spencer atop a crane voicing his instructions to the ever willing participants.
Just what is the legendary artist is aiming to portray? We’ll have to wait for his final photograph to find out!

My friends and I were yellow people.
It was such an amazing experience to be a part of something so creative and liberating.
Nice one Big Chill for hosting!

Wow! What great fun this was! Very liberating, silly and grassy grass.
Note the secret, private location right next to the lake! Ah well….
BTW, that’s me on the left in black…….

Had a great time in yellow that morning and enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere. Everything was very professional and I will never regret having such a great opportunity to be a part of living art!
I would do it again.

Was great fun posing for Spencer Tunick at the weekend, and he and his team were such a pleasure to work for really! Best weather of the whole festival too! As we tried to stay away from other colours to avoid contaminating our purity LOL it is only now looking at the photos that I realise yellow were rather in the minority, a good thing we all got along!
Btw post more photos please everybody. I saw 10 times as many cameras there as I’ve seen photos so far. Let’s see ‘em, you saw ours after all

It was a great event to be part of , and Spencer was a lovely chap to be directed by. He had a lovely disposition and was able communicate with so many people and his staff with manners and ease.

I agree. I’m so glad we made the effort to get up early to take part in this event – though I have to say I did feel sick up until the point we all stripped off. After that moment all inhibitions went by the way side. What fun. I was amazed by how quickly the photo shoot time went and, I guess a little disappointed more people didn’t take part. Well done Big Chill.

OMG! It was such fun! I was a yellow too! Went on my own and met some lovely people there! It was such a liberating feeling and I’d definately do it again! Only seen a few photos so far but can’t wait to see the finished piece!

Nearly wimped out, but so glad I didn’t. Best fun I’ve had in ages, like a weird game of Twister! Glad Alison mentioned the ‘grassy grass’ – I’d forgotten that! I’m now so proud of being part of something so special- I feel we will always have a bond

Had queued up at the hippy tent at the top of the hill for a nervous cup of tea before the shoot and stood behind a guy dressed as a penguin – that was when I realised it was going to be a weird day!
Met loads of lovely, fun and literally colourful people. It was liberating and uplifting-not a bit pervy. I laughed all morning and know that if Ican get my kit off in a field with seven hundred strangers and be in a photo that will be shown internationally-I can do anything !!!
Hi to all especially the pinks Shout out to George, Becky and Bryony xxx

Hi – I was one of the black people! I am so pleased that I took part in a bit of art! Thanks to the lovely lady who was with me. We decided that we would be painted black as it was ‘more slimming’!. Couldn’t believe how easy it was to do and what a buzz I felt for the rest of the day – even tho my 14 year old daughter was appalled!

One of the most exciting things I have ever done. Glad I took part in this living art project. Big thanks to Fiona and John for joining me for the fun. My first of Big Chill and what an experience. Def be back next year. Love to all yellows x

I really wanted to do this as soon as I found out it was going to happen. Wasn’t nervous but found myself getting jealous (!) when the yellows and pinks were getting their own time only to realise, being teal, that along with black and blue, we would get our time also.
Managed to see the back of my head a couple of times in photos and one of my face, but you’re right, there’s not much out there at the moment.
I just wish I didn’t look so cold (!)
even though I wasn’t…

Hay, does anyone know which news paper it was going to be in?

@Steve (and everyone, really),
I’ve found loads of pics and a few vids of the Spencer-Tunick thing. My partner and I were pinky/purple, and our 7 year old daughter was sat in a bright greeny-yellow tent with the clothes. Have a look on YouTube and Flickr, for starters, and also the the Big Chill Festival Facebook group – I’ve posted quite a few pics and links there.
BTW, what a brilliant laugh it was! We stayed behind for the Sunday Times shoot, managed to get interviewed, and kept our paint on all day. I’ve seen a few other peoples’ pics here and there with me in them. Was there ‘reunion’ later that day? there are a couple of pics on Flickr that look like painted people in clothes dancing around en masse in the dark.
Cheers,
Lol

Hi coloured friends, As I visit friends, family and work colleagues (and thanks to my wifes text messages and emails) they all ask what it was like appearing in a naked art installation for Spencer Tunick? One customer even has the Metro picture pinned up on a noticeboard with a circle around me (they’re wrong) in the pink stripe.
Waiting for the Sunday Times tommorow. Have checked out the pictures on Flickr and I still look decent. A fab experience and I am so glad I did it AND that it wasn’t wet – that paint would never have dried. I also feature briefly in the BBC video with Laura my posing partner. What is is wierd as I didn’t see the cameraman on the day. Best wishes to every one who took part. A great memory a great morning. David
