Earplay – The Remixes

Such is the inherent beauty of Sheffield duo Animat’s musical output over the years; that the great and the good from the world of cinema and animation have been happy for them to rescore some of their films or animations. We are talking people of the stature of genius Film Director and music enthusiast David Lynch, who allowed the intrepid Sheffield based DJ, Composition and Production duo to rewrite the score to his Oscar nominated movie The Straight Story. They toured this innovative live rescore throughout 2008. Animat are Michael Harding and Mark Daly who hail from Sheffield and have been working together since 2002 in various different musical and production guises.

Prior to The Straight Story Animat worked on a rescore of Bellville Rendezvous, Sylvian Chomet’s extraordinary animation, which they performed at The Leeds Film Festival, Elefest, The Big Chill. This musical rescore then went on to be a sell out tour of intimate independent cinemas around the UK. In 2009 they also rescored Tuvalu by German director Veit Helmer’s, which they performed at Beatherder, Greenbelt, Big Chill, Moor Music and Festinho.

With their many stunning visual collaborations it would be very easy to over look the standard and extremely moving quality of Animat’s musical output. In 2008 The Big Chill Label released their debut album EARPLAY. The album has steadily grown in stature since it’s release. The album is steeped in the musical roots of the early electro visual days of The Big Chill and the freedom that leading contemplative electronic recording artists like Tom Middleton and Alucidnation enjoyed at that time. EARPLAY – THE REMIXES brings together all the remixes that have come about since the release of the original album in one stunning 12-track collection.

Classic reinterpretations like the Santa Cruz Mosque Remix of Riverbed Road, which features Lisa Palmer’s stunning vocals. There are also remixes by fellow Big Chill Label mate Leggo Beast and further contributions from Mistrust, Foundwaves, Echaskech and Just Music superstars Laroca. EARPLAY – THE REMIXES really underlines the sheer quality of the musical output Animat are capable of above and beyond their Audio Visual artist label. In many ways a remix album is more in keeping with the ethos of Animat’s unique spirit. The rescore kings are suitably and justifiably remixed.
