And the winner is….

September 9th, 2011 by

From a shortlist of 12, PJ Harvey’s ‘Let England Shake’ has seen off stiff competition to bag the accolade of Album of the Year at the Barclaycard Mercury Prize held last night at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London.

All in attendance were in awe at her mesmerizing performance. All except Adele, due to a chest infection, played at the event where speculation grew to an all time high with Jools Holland finally declaring PJ Harvey the winner, ten years after her last win in 2001 on the eve of 9/11.

Even more exciting was that we had already seen 7 of the 12 bands play at our festivals. Anna Calvi, James Blake both played stellar sets at Latitude, whilst Ghostpoet, Katy B, Metronomy and James Blake again who broke out of their shells and really proved their worth at The Big Chill and finally, Reading & Leeds hosted Elbow, Everything Everything and Metronomy.

This year’s shortlist consisted of:

Adele – 21
Anna Calvi – Anna Calvi
Elbow – Build A Rocket Boys!
Everything Everything – Man Alive
Ghostpoet – Peanut Butter Blues and Melancholy Jam
Gwilym Simcock – Good Days At Schloss Elmau
James Blake – James Blake
Katy B – On A Mission
King Creosote & Jon Hopkins – Diamond Mine
Metronomy – The English Riviera
PJ Harvey – Let England Shake
Tinie Tempah – Disc-Overy
