Cassetteboy talks tunes, dreadlocks and strippers

November 24th, 2011 by

Simon forms one half of Brighton duo Casetteboy, who have been described as musical terrorists, guerrillas and geniuses amongst other things! In case you didn’t already know, they sample whatever comes their way and cut it up into component parts, transforming it into something different and fantastically controversial. Needless to say, we’re VERY excited about having Cassetteboy join the wonderfully eclectic line-up at our How’s My Raving? Worst Xmas party… Ever at the Big Chill House. Simon kindly agreed to answer a few questions for us ahead of the event (and what enertaining answers they are!)

What’s your ‘Tune Of The Day’?

Kath Bloom “It’s so hard to come home”

What’s the best experience you’ve had as a DJ?

I don’t really enjoy DJ’ing so it’s hard to say. Once when I was DJ’ing in Clacton, this guy’s dreadlock got stuck to the stylus and we had to call out Essex fire brigade to free the man because we didn’t want to lose the stylus and he didn’t want to lose his dread. He was adamant that it wasn’t his fault.

And the worst?

I once DJ’ed in a strip bar with someone else’s records. The DJ booth was located at the back of the stage and there were girls taking their clothes off on the front of the stage. I got paid £80 for it. One of those last two stories is true. Can you tell which one?

What’s the best venue you’ve DJ’ed in?

The best venue I have ever DJ’ed in would have to be Doctor Who’s Tardis. It was way back in the days when the Doctor was in his Colin Baker phase and I have to say that although at that time he was terribly dressed, he was also a lovely bloke. Anyway while I was DJ’ing, the Doctor flew the Tardis. DJing in the Tardis meant that I was able to deliver literally the best DJ set ever heard by mankind. This was because the Tardis allowed me to gauge audience reaction to the songs I was choosing and if a reaction to a certain track was bad, I could use the Tardis to go back in time and select a better song. It really was quite superb.

I couldn’t get through the day without…

My girlfriend. (although she told me to put that in) Torrents.  I do like a coffee in the mornings. God yeah. Mmmmmm. I also couldn’t get through the day without this film…
