A quick chat with… Kidkanevil
December 26th, 2011 by Abby
Growing up on a healthy diet of Jazz, sound system culture and the golden age of sampling, Kidkanevil developed a distinctive downbeat sound over the years, a sound which he describes as ‘imaginary Hip Hop’. He’s been a member of the experimental band Stateless, has written for the taste-making music magazine, Straight No Chaser, and now Kidkanevil will be gracing the decks at The Doctor’s Orders New Year’s Eve Party at the Big Chill House! Here he tells us about his best and worst DJ’ing experiences and presents us with a little selection of his hits from 2011
What’s the track that gets you up in the morning?
Beastie Boys – Get It Together
What’s your ‘Tune of 2011′?
Jealousguys – Animals
What’s the best experience you’ve had as a DJ?
Oh man, that’s too tough! I don’t know about ever, but playing Sonar this year was pretty special for me. Spinning at J Dilla changed my life, it was a beautiful experience, and Croatia’s always dope. Playing at Syndicate in Singapore has to be one of the best all-round experiences too, it’s so amazing over there and those guys are super cool.
And the worst?
It was actually a really dope night, but probably the worst DJ set I’ve ever played was at my own album launch party!! Haha. I was so nervous all night and had so much to think about and sort out that when it came to actually DJing, my mind just froze and went into meltdown. I played a completely all-over-the place set and completely forgot to play any of my own music. It actually seemed to go fine, but by my own standards I messed that one up big time!
If I wasn’t a DJ I would be…
learning to DJ
**Kidkanevil’s Best of 2011 mix, which he put together ahead of his set at The Doctor’s Orders New Year’s Eve Party, is an absolute corker! Check it out to get yourself in the mood for the big night**
