BIG CHILL PRESENTS 5 QUESTIONS: GIRL UNIT

For those that don’t know - give us a brief introduction to who you are and what you do:
I DJ and produce as GIRL UNIT. Primarily, I play house music, although I’d say my sets pretty much explore a lot of house music’s offshoots so you might find yourself hearing anything from Chicago juke to S.A. House to Dutch bubbling beats. I suppose whatever I do play it usually has a pretty intensive dancefloor vibe.

The best thing about what you do is…
I guess that it never really feels like work, playing tracks and producing seems to satisfy a compulsion for me plus music in London is heading off in so many interesting directions right now its allowing me to really push my selection further.

What’s your current top 5 tracks?
1. Rishi Romero - African Forest
2. NGUZUNGUZU - Got U
3. DJ Mike Q ft. Vjuan Allure and Wensy Williams - How You Doin?
4. Jodeci - Freek’n'You(MK Dub)
5. Mike V - Feelings

What are you working on at present?
I’m currently working on an EP to be put out on the Night Slugs label in April as well as a remix for Roulet, a kuduro artist coming out on Buraka Som Sistema’s Enchufada label, and a remix for Marcus Price & Carli which should be out on Palms Out Records very soon.

Finally, you’re playing soon at Big Chill Presents, what can our crowd expect from you?
Strictly Rhythm trax, Brick City club, Dutch house bangers, slow crunk jams, funky/afro house, juke tracks, and no doubt my own productions. Hopefully a good workout too.

www.myspace.com/girl_unit

GIRL UNIT will be playing ‘The Big Chill Presents’ alongside Radioclit, Doc Daneeka, Greena and Oliver Rant @ The Big Chill House on 19th March.

BIG CHILL PRESENTS 5 QUESTIONS: Oliver Rant

For those that don’t know - give us a brief introduction to who you are and what you do:
My name is Oliver Rant. I like to make and play music I was too middle class to openly enjoy the first time around, huzzah! Originally from High Wycombe before moving to Bristol where I honed my craft with my dear friend Julio Bashmore, currently residing in London making music for thugs to make love to.

The best thing about what you do is…
Getting people south of Birmingham to dance to my inherited and extensive collection of Tiday Trax 12″.

What’s your current top 5 tracks?
1. Hell Interface - Midas Touch
2. Busy Singal - Tie And Dye
3. Zed Bias - Neighborhood 09 (Roska Remix)
4. Antonio - Hype The Funk
5. Mavado - Nah Bleach Wid Cream

What are you working on at present?
A few remixes for a brilliant band called Is Tropical, another remix for a Berlin producer who’s about to have his first official release called Leo Diamond and tidying up my own bootleg remix of 187 lock down - Gunman. I’m also getting ready to head back to Europe for a few dates late spring / early summer making sure my live set is nice and tidy.

Finally, you’re playing soon at Big Chill Presents, what can our crowd expect from you?
A trans-decade mess of vocal euro house, impertinent 2 step classics and hard house piano stabs.

www.myspace.com/oliverrant
Oliver Rant will be playing ‘The Big Chill Presents’ alongside Radioclit, Doc Daneeka, Greena and Girl Unit @ The Big Chill House on 19th March.

Friday night at the Big Chill House is a merrymaking night if you will. A get together, a bash and a night of A line-ups. Last month, The Big Chill Presents (a night dedicated to bringing you the finest music from around the world) welcomed Egyptian Lover. Oh what a night. This month The Big Chill Presents Radioclit, we will also be joined by Champion Sounds, a very Warm party on the 5th and last but not least Ou Est La Swimming Pool. All Friday nights are free before 10pm, £5 after.

Friday 5th March - WARM present MARK E, GERD JANSON, SIMON LEE, MOCK & TOOF, DISCO&CO RESIDENTS and WARM RESIDENTS

Their March party will see them once again taking over both floors bringing together a complete cross range of artists from across the globe as well as from our own shores!

First of all we welcome a long-time friend of the Warm family, the slo-mo edit king himself, Mark E. For the past 5 years Mark has been crafting hypnotic, soulful disco cuts that have established him as an undisputed master of the genre. Tracks by Janet Jackson, Womack & Womack, and Grace Jones have all been given the Mark E treatment to stunning effect, with his edit of Jackson turning a little-known album track into one of 2007’s most talked about floor-fillers and raising the bar for what is expected from an edit. His forays into original production have been just as special, with releases on Under The Shade, Running Back, Endless Flight and his own label Merc showcasing the instantly recognisable Mark E sound.

The Heatwave

Before founding Heatwave with Sam Lawlor and Henry back in 2003, Gabriel had played at and promoted nights in London, Bristol and Valencia. The early days of Heatwave saw it move around various venues in East London while Gabriel was resident DJ at 333’s dancehall fortnightly CherryPie.

Gabriel started DJing in 1998, at first mainly hip hop and 70s dub, before being converted wholesale to reggae and dancehall in Spain in 2001. Upon arriving in Valencia for a 12 month stay and discovering that Spain’s third largest city had no dedicated hip hop shop but did boast a recently-opened reggae store, Gabriel began buying 7″ singles and became hooked. Under the name Xiquet, Gabriel founded More Fire Sound with Italian MC Montikilla, playing regularly at the legendary Juanita Club. Together withHenry Heatwave aka Mr Pannot, Danny Kingston, Julien Rihani and Twister, the sound played throughout Valencia and Barcelona and at the U-Zona reggae festival on the same bill as Buju Bantonand Luciano.

Gabriel presented various radio shows from 2000-2003 on Bristol’s Burst FM and Valencia’s Radio UPV(formerly Radio Fí). As Programming Director and Head of Music at Burst FM alongside Station ManagerSam Roberts, Gabriel commissioned shows from DJs like Rob Ellis aka Pinch, Paul Rose & El Sid (Hot Flush) and Tapedecklee aka Paul STN and promoted the station’s successful nights featuring the likes of Mr Scruff, Jah Warrior, Deckwrecka and Fingathing.

Since starting to write music reviews and features at university, Gabriel has written for publications like Undercover and SOS, worked as Dance Music Editor for Epigram in Bristol and currently contributes toWoofah. Gabriel began making blends and refixes in 2002 and has been producing original music - often alongside his brother, Myddelman - since 2006.

www.theheatwave.co.uk

Thursday 11th - Young Lion BBC 1xtra

Flying in from LA for a London exclusive, Egyptian Lover (AKA Greg James Broussard) touches down for a very special party on the 12th February, with Ali Renault (Heartbreak) and Cocadisco DJ’s supporting. A true electro legend, the ‘lover’ had big hits with ‘Yes, Yes Yes’, ‘Dial-A-Freak’, and ‘Egypt, Egypt’ and still is a biggy in the scene today getting massive props for his Jamie Jones collaboration. We get the low-down from the man himself before the big night…

Hi Greg! How are you today? Firstly, where did the name Egyptian Lover come from?

I made the name up when I was a young man by mixing King Tut (a young Egyptian King) and Rudolph Valentino (an actor who often played a Lover on Film).

You started out DJing for Uncle Jamm’s Army - how did you originally hook up?

I tried to do dances to rival Uncle Jam’s Army but could not compete. One day “Snake Puppy” told Rodger Clayton from “Uncle Jamm’s Army” that I was the baddest D.J. ever! That weekend I played for Uncle Jam’s Army and rocked the house. I landed the job on the spot.

Any memorable / funny stories from the Uncle Jam’s Army parties back then?

Too many to list… I am writing a book that I want to make into a movie. But it was just so freaky back then, with music from Prince and Rick James and all the freaky party people at the parties, it was like a freak-fest every week.

How did you progress from the Uncle Jam’s Army to the Egyptian Lover rank?

When I D.J.’d for Uncle Jam’s Army I did many tricks on the turntables and unique mixes that were new to the eager ears of the party people. My style of mixing started a new trend in L.A. I became really popular and brought an 808 drum machine to the dances and people use to ask what record was I playing. So right then I knew I had to make a record.

Your last album ‘Platinum Pyramids’ came out in 2006, can we expect another one any time soon?

Yes, Electro Pharaoh, Scandinavian Summer, and Freaky D.J. are already on iTunes and a whole new album is coming in 2010. With songs entitled “U.F.O.”, “Dance 2 My Beat”, “Do U wanna get Down?”, “Belly Dance”, and many more. It will be a full electro album. All dance songs. For my old school fans.

You did the vocals for Jamie Jones’ track ‘Egyptian Lover’. How did this happen and is there anyone you would like to work with in the future?

Jamie Jones hit me up on MySpace and asked if I would work with him, after I checked him out and saw what he was doing, I decided to work with him to make “Galactic Space Bar”. We also shot a video. It was fun and he is a really talented guy. I will probably do more songs with him. I also like Clone records artist, Aux 88, Jimmy Edgar, and many many more. It would be a dream to work with Kraftwerk.

You’re playing a London exclusive for us at The Big Chill House in February. Can you tell what’s in store for The Big Chill crew?

Pure old school D.J.ing and some 808 beats to keep the party boomin’ with some live P.A. to sing my songs as I play them. Don’t miss me mix “Planet Rock” backwards!

You currently live in LA, What’s the party and club scene like there?

It’s so many clubs and styles down here that I can play at pretty much any club. No matter what they play… electro, hip-hop, rave, disco, house, R&B, old school, freestyle, techno, funk, I’m considered old school so all of L.A. knows my stuff. It’s still being played on the radio.

Where do your ideas for songs come from?

All my songs come from experiences. I have been writing for so long that I have over 5,000 songs written. I go through them and take out about 4 or 5 and combined them to make a new one. It seems that many trips to Europe inspire me to write and make beats because of their love of my music.

If you could choose anyone in the world (dead or alive) as a mentor who would it be and why?

Prince, He has been my mentor since day one.

What’s next on the agenda for Egyptian Lover?

New album, new web site, and concerts all over the world.

Any messages for those coming down to see you play on the 12th?

Come enjoy the music and the style of D.J.ing that I created back in the early 80’s. Tricks on the turntables, using vinyl! Rocking the TR-808, boomin’ the bass and the Egyptian Sexy Style only I can give you. Don’t miss this!

Thank you for your time! We can’t wait to see you!

The Egyptian Lover is playing at The Big Chill House on Friday 12th February, with support from Ali Renault (Heartbreak), Cocadisco DJs and How’s My Raving? VIP Crew DJ.
Now the Pelski crew have put together a formidable line-up for their first event at The Big Chill House - with two of the biggest names ripping up the UK bass rulebook. Our headliners - Rustie and Roska - have been hugely influential in pushing the UK bass scene forward and shaping the urban dubstep-dominated soundscape of 2010.

They like to nice it up with reggae, dancehall, bashment…..but also a touch a tropical, hip hop, soul, b-more, dubstep, garage, UK funky and dutty electro.

Thursday 11th February: Serocee (DJ Set)

Born in Small Heath, Birmingham UK, Serocee showed signs of his musical talent at an early age. As a baby he was sent back home to Kingston, for a Jamaican education and this was where he had his first real exposure to Reggae music. A lasting love affair was born. Though a self-proclaimed hip hop master now, Serocee’s native roots still resonate through his work. A strict Christian household meant no reggae, but his family embraced the church choir scene and music was always an integral part of life for the young Serocee. He penned his first melody at age eight. On his return to Birmingham, Serocee found the transition tricky, and often fought with his new counterparts. It isn’t in his nature to enamor violence though, and soon his foes were suffering from a more verbal punishment. “We’d spend hours cussing/blazing at lunchtimes, during class, break times then after school, I was a champion at it and that’s how I learnt to build witty lyrics”. At 14 Serocee created a rap group called “Crossfire” and they achieved local success working with the likes of Pato Banton. He won all the rap battles at the Porsche and Q clubs, and further perfected his technique from watching his favourites in the sidelines. Artists such as Cutty Ranks, Macka B, Shabba Ranks, Ninjaman, Tiger, Mad Cobra and Papa San saw most of his pocket money. Since moving to London in 1999, he has been extremely busy. He is currently polishing his debut solo project and preparing for his imminent tour of the States, France, Germany, Australia & Jamaica. “I have been getting a lot of good airplay for my tracks on the radio and I’m gonna use this opportunity to get my music in front of people in the hope they can feel what I feel. I know I have more to say than the usual tales of sex, drugs and money - I’m tryinna inspire people through my music”. “I am currently working with Darkjoint, Cavey, Karl Hinds and Urban Monk, Premier Williams and 76 as producers. The album will be called “Second Generation Windrush Pickney”, so look out for it cause it’s gonna be big!”

Thursday 18th February: Trinidad Carnival Special

Trinidad Carnival special: soca, bashment and UK funky from The Heatwave and Sticky.

Thursday 25th February: Mighty Moe (Heartless Crew)

Mighty Moe aka Metric Moses is a veteran and pioneer of the UK music scene in his own right. Originally a Hip Hop DJ, when he joined the Heartless Crew as a teenager, he is now widely recognized for his vibrant, catchy lyrics and intelligent word play. It would be no exaggeration to say that as an MC, Mighty Moe has inspired and influenced many artists in the UK today. His comfort zone is in music, wether it’s cooking up hot beats in the studio, cutting up tunes on the decks or spitting fire on the mic, Mighty Moe certainly lives up to his name.

www.myspace.com/metricmoses

Grasscut return with ‘Muppet’ - the second single from their forthcoming debut album and you can get your paws on a copy of the Nathan Fake remix for free - just click here!

Continuing their theme of exploring the essence of our culture, on “Muppet” Andrew Phillips and Marcus O’Dair deal with losing your ability to communicate, something Phillips describes as “a very English kind of frustration. “I was talking to a bunch of people having a conversation none of us could be bothered to have,” Phillips explains. “And I could hear someone gossiping about a mutual friend behind me - I couldn’t resist pretending to text while actually recording them.” While this may not make Phillips your ideal friend, it results in great music. “I wrote the song while walking home and recorded the vocal straight into my phone. Musically it had to go from a pop song to total self-destruction. I remember Marcus ramming a drumstick into a cymbal, jamming the stick into a tom and bowing the cymbal furiously while I was yelling at the end. We really went there.”

Remix duties are ably dealt with by Nathan Fake, the estimable Norfolkian who can throw in everything from next-wave computer rock techno to vertiginous ambient pilgrimages, or in this case, come up with something in between. The package is rounded out by the ecstatic, electro-psych sweep of “Meadowhall At Last”.

Already acclaimed by Tom Robinson as “making genuinely daring music that still remains an accessible and enjoyable listen,” Grasscut are set to release one of the oddest, most listenable and strangely uplifting albums of the year.
