Beach
BeachMixed by Pete Lawrence
(Big Chill, 2000)
Inspired by a visit to Naxos (in preparation for the Big Chill's first holiday adventure there), Pete Lawrence created what for many has become one of the defining chill out albums to date.
By allowing his highly inclusive approach to mixing full rein here - who else creates compilations that take you from Scottish harp music to DJ Food's rampant sampling? - Pete showed that chill out is not so much a musical genre as an attitude.
The inclusion of real-life samples of the Aegean ocean, birdsong and children playing on the beach points the way here: this is music born of a deep connection with the fundamentals of human life. In particular, 'Beach' is a testament to how much the Big Chill is committed to the rediscovery of beauty as an artistic ideal, something with which our culture has, perhaps, lost touch in its pursuit of other, more worldly, pleasures.
A truly beautiful, timeless mix filled with the sound of summer.
