MICHAEL COOK - A PROFILE

Michael Cook - A Profile

Michael Cook is a 23-year veteran of the black art of playing one record swiftly followed by another, occasionally at the right speed.

Way, way back through the mists of time when you used to be able to leave your wife’s jewellery on the back seat of your Ford Anglia and a DJ set was not limited by BPM or genre, Michael first formed his uniquely eclectic style.

In the smoke filled bingo halls and working men’s clubs of 80s Northern England Michael plied his trade mixing up unlikely concoctions of punk, funk, early electro (both US and Euro), reggae and the occasional surf tune all in dangerous proximity.

Leaving his native Manchester in 1986, with impeccable timing just prior to it becoming the new centre of the universe, Michael travelled to Los Angeles where he helped found the West Coast’s first acid house and warehouse parties.

Throughout the late 80s and early 90s Michael gained notoriety in the US playing at seminal events, venues and parties such as Alice’s House, Gilligan’s Island, Truth, Hacienda US Tour, NY’s Limelight, and had residencies at Prince’s Glam Slam club in LA and SF’s 1015 club.

Michael’s notoriety extended well beyond the club world as his nocturnal warehouse commandeering activities attracted the attentions of the LAPD, FDLA and ATF and he spent many an early morning in the glamorous PVC clad confines of black and white cars with flashing blue and white lights on top.

These days Michael’s eclectic style and specialist sets are in great demand.

Michael plays all over the world, including regular sets for many of London’s finest music bars including The Big Chill Bar, AKA, The Tabernacle, Sosho, Market Place, Cantaloupe, & The Player.
