Leggo Beast - A Profile
Murray Clark, the creator of the fantastically wild electro creature Leggo Beast is not a man to compromise. He is however someone who will make a definitive musical statement. Which is an unusual approach in the electro arena, given the current obsession with remixes, mutations and collaborations. Leggo Beast like some mythical electro beast was born whole. When Murray creates a piece of music he does a selection of mixes and then destroys the ‘parts’. This auto-destructivist stance is about being happy to stop and move on creatively. It takes a certain amount of courage, confidence and clarity to do. It has it’s roots in the tradition of performance and of things being what they are when they happen.Murray Clark was initially known as being one half of Bullitnuts signed to the seminal label Pork. During that time Bullitnuts, and then Leggo Beast released several 12 inches and were included on many compilations. Feathered Up and Donkey Stroke 12’s, First of The Day album as Bullitnuts.
Murray also has a career as a remixer, producer and DJ. Which given his own stance on remixes is mildly ironic. As with all these things very often one position comes about as a result of the other. Remix credits include, G Stone - Tosca, Opik - Deconstruction, Royal Palm - Robin Jones, Sugar Daddy - Superstars of Rock, Mantra - Natasha Atlas. Other production credits include a piece for the Freezone on Addictive TV, Addidas and Quango for Island Records. As a DJ he has had residencies and shows at Fabric, The Elbow Rooms, The Embassy Rooms, Tribecca Grand (New York), Lamb and The Welly in his native Hull with Fila Brazillia.
Leggo Beast's first album 'Thunk' on Big Chill Recordings comes into being as the baby of all these experiences. Beats meet Duran inspired keyboard stabs, melding with Herbie Hancock electro riffs, hetro camp stances blend into soulful vocals. Tracks like Moonboots and Smitten seem to be at opposite ends of the musical spectrum yet somehow they all sit together perfectly on Thunk. The album starts with a conversation between two people on a CB Radio. The artwork designed by Murray is taken from a set of photographs of people who reside and create in motorised vehicles in the US, strange trailer park people. Thunk is an album for the traveller within us all, for anyone who understands Marzipan Eyes.
