Different Drummer Soundsystem - Artist Profile

We caught up with Different Drummer after their 2005 Big Chill festival set...

Did you enjoy your set?
WE REALLY ENJOYED IT. THE CROWD WERE REALLY ENTHUSIATIC AND DEFINITELY UP FOR A PARTY. THE CREW WERE POLITE, HELPFUL AND ORGANISED.

What did you think of The Big Chill 2005?
SEEMS TO GET BETTER AND BETTER. VIBE WAS AS GOOD AS I'VE EVER SEEN IT. IT'S NOT A SECRET ANYMORE BUT THE HUGE NUMBERS HAVEN'T TAKEN AWAY THE ORIGINAL VIBE CREATED ALL THOSE YEAR'S AGO. WE WERE ONLY THERE FOR 12 HRS SO DIDN'T SEE MANY ACTS. FATBACK BAND WERE GOOD AND UNDERGROUND RESISTANCE SEEMED TO BE ROCKING IT.

What are you up to now?

Different Drummer Soundsystem - Biography

Founded in 1992 by Richard “DJ Dick” Whittingham and Glyn “Bigga” Bush, Different Drummer has been one of the best kept secrets in the UK’s prolific underground music scene. Early releases by Rockers Hi-Fi (nee Original Rockers) set the standards for this small yet perfectly formed record label……a truly eclectic selection of underground music from local and international talent.

Big Chill favourites “Mighty Math” and “International Observer” are two of the recent contributors to a catalogue that includes UK Hip- Hop (Elementz & Lyric Superbrand), NZ Downtempo (Phase 5 & Sideways) and Nu-Dub (G Corp, Noiseshaper & Pre Fade Listening).

Different Drummer have also been remixing acts as diverse as Rae & Christian, Horace Andy, Phoneheads and Sandie Shaw.

Subsidiary 12 inch label “Leftfoot Recordings” has released Nu-Jazz and Latin Influenced sounds (Rockers Hi-fi meet Ella Fitzgerald & Passenger) and will soon be showcasing new left-of-centre material from Biggabush & Frankie Valley amongst others.

Different Drummer’s regular club night “Leftfoot” has become the focal point for Birmingham’s music-lovers with guests such as Gilles Peterson, Kruder & Dorfmeister, Jazzanova, Mr Scruff, Fila Brazillia, Grand Central, Roots Manuva, Carl Craig & many more. Furthermore, a bi-monthly “Leftfoot” night was launched in Paris in February, and a monthly session will also be starting in Cologne from September.

The Different Drummer Soundsystem is a collective of 2-5 people that reside at all the “Leftfoot” nights and play regular guest spots at clubs & festivals around the world. DJ’s Dick & Adam Regan play a freestyle selection that takes in Dub, Reggae, Hip-Hop, Deep House, Nu-Jazz and Global Sounds. MC’s Tweed & Farda P host the proceedings in their own inimitable styles, whilst Studio-Don Frankie Valley adds Dub Fx, Samples, and Percussion.
