Agk - The Liking Of Things
AGK could only have come into being in the UK. They are the archetypal odd couple, except that they are a trio, and their music takes you on an introspective trip through loss into euphoria. They are a British group in the noble tradition of groups like Japan, The Associates and The Divine Comedy. They have that unique understated oddness that is at once heart-warming yet disturbing. The Liking of Things sounds like the kind of tunes Oscar Wilde might have played in a turn of the century Opium den, if Technics had made gramophones. There is something unattainable about their new album - The Liking of Things - like the summit is always just another few miles and the horizon is always where you are heading. There is a sense that you are travelling but not solely in the geographical sense. Although AGK are not averse to travel, vocalist Ben Ackland once recreated a trip by his hero Laurens Van Der Post and travelled into the Kalahari Desert on a donkey. The Liking of Things is a seductive electro romantic masterpiece, taking its musical inspiration from the decade that taste almost forgot, were it not for the sterling efforts of A-ha, Talk Talk and Duran Duran.
'The Liking of Things' by AGK is released on Big Chill Recordings on September on CD and mp3 on September 12th, 2005.
