Milky Globe

Milky Globe's regular bar session has seen guests like Jerry Dammers, Rothko, Pete fowler, Isan, James Holden, Theodore and Mescalito join curator Milky Globe.

I caught up with Milky Globe and he pulled me close and pressed me to his chest as he answered my questions...

What's your name?
Jon Tye aka Milky Globe.

Where do you call home?
Cornwall.

What is your night at The Big Chill Bar called and how would you describe the music policy?
Milky Globe & friends playing from cosmic disco to warped folk.

What are your current Top 3 tunes?
Milky Globe - Disco Gardens (Lo)
The Emperor Machine - Front Man (Idjut Boys mix) (DC)
Basil Kirchin - Abstractions of the Industrial North (Trunk)

What's the secret of playing a good set at the bar?
Good guest dj's, good music and plenty of friends getting in the mood.

Where else do you play / have you played?
Tate Gallery, London. Triptych festival, Glasgow. Guido's, Rome. Sonar Festival, Barcelona. Batofar, Paris.

When did you first encounter The Big Chill and what mental image do the words 'Big Chill' conjur up for you?
My favourite memory is playing at the first Big Chill festival in the Black Mountains and i can see the tent where we camped on the hillside.

What's your favourite meal on the bar menu, and if someone was to offer to buy you a drink, what would you ask for?
I usually go for the burger and chips as it's not something i usually get to eat and it's well done. I'd go for the konig wheat beer.

Ever had anything funny, bizarre, random or cool happen while playing there? A favourite memory from one of your nights?
A very drunk man at the bar shouting at me how good i was...people dancing to a joe gibbs record i played...jerry dammers djing, he looks so intense and plays such heavy library music.

What's your favourite website (apart from this one, of course)?
Pete Fowlers monsterism site is superb. kids and adults love it.

Milky Globe - profile
Milky Globe is the new project from Jon Tye, label boss of Lo Recordings, home to Cursor Miner and Toob amongst others. Previous incarnations of Jon's have covered everything from Acid and Deep House as Funtopia, Techno and Ambient as LO, Trip Hop and Downtempo as 2 Player, Firing Drill & Bass as Twisted Science and even proto Garage mash ups as Hairy Butter! Like the label he runs, this man is truly eNresplendent in divergence. Whilst there was a time when his DJ sets were likely to clear not just dancefloors but entire buildings, his recent relocation to Cornwall finds him in a more mellow musical mood must be something in the water!

This first Milky Globe release was created using a deadly cocktail of Glockenspiel, Casio Keyboard and Rhythm ace. all instruments were played by Jon Tye with the exception of electric piano by Daniel Pemberton and Moog Bass played by CornwalliLs first son of Acid Luke Vibert. Accompanying the Original on this lovely whit vinyl 12 you'll find 3 contrasting mixes of excellence. Scsi-9 and are perhaps the best-known Russian producers since Tchaikovsky and Shostakovich! Scsi-9 have made a particular impact across Europe, thanks to their releases on both Force Inc. and Michael MayeriLs Kompakt label. Here they excel again, delivering their unique brand of Glitchy House music whilst capturing the mood of the original perfectly. impart their own dreamy electronic interpretation here that stays true to the original but serves as a welcome alternative. Colin McBean should need little introduction. He initially made his name through his work with Cisco Ferreira as The Advent. He then pursued a solo career, releasing under various monikers including Mango Boy, The Reaver, Tommy Atkins and of course Mr G. Here we find Colin on top form with an abstract percussive looper that carries a hint of 80's influence!
