Telefuzz - The Financiers Of Samsara
Thought I'd put pen to paper and give a quick review of the new Telefuzz album which is due out in August. There's always been a bit of mutual admiration between myself and Don Verbrilli. The way he structures and moulds his work isn't that disimilar to the way I work, and I've always found his music to aurally hit the spot.
After the Telefuzz debut 'Sleep' from a couple of years ago, I was pleased to get this new one in the post. It's been in and out of the CD player on numerous occasions over the past couple of weeks, and it's most certainly a grower...
Got to say that for me, the album really starts to gain momentum from 'Poolgazing' onwards. That's not to say that the first three pieces aren't any good; they are - I especially liked the cheeky Original Rockers samples on 'Reef Patrol', but from track four onwards, the album really begins to take shape. 'Poolgazing' is classic Verbrilli, with its sustained minor chords and out there blissed guitar riffing. Then straight into 'Hydrofables', a 4/4 housey chugger that kept my head nodding.
'That was the Day' is a lazy, mellow affair with Hammond and the guitar work is reminiscent of Ashra. 'Snakecharmer' uses snippets of spoken word to effect, with great live drums by E.D Swankz - I'm sure this track will translate a treat when the band perform it live as a three piece this summer.
Then into the title track - 'The Financiers of Samsara' - a bit of an epic running to nearly nine minutes and using the vocal talents of Om Johari to great effect.
'Coral Cities' and 'Enchantress' round off this LP nicely; especially the ambient stylings of the latter with the beautiful vocal (sample?) and accomplished guitar work.
