Mr Scruff - Big Chill Classics

Mr Scruff - Big Chill Classics

In a change of tack from BCHQ, The Big Chill have released a new style of compilation, one that allows a more individualistic view of the music that epitomises the vibe of a Big Chill event, and first up is perennial favourite, Manchester's boy wonder, Mr Scruff.

Mr Scruff has been playing at Big Chill events for about ten years, now, so is more than qualified to offer an opinion on what music represents the Big Chill, and without a doubt this track selection could only have been compiled by him. It moves between genres, touching on Funk, Jazz, World, Reggae, Trip Hop and more, pulling out choice favourites from over the last 40 years. However every single tune does ooze the qualities that Mr Scruff wants from all his tunes: original, honest and heartfelt "Soul", and that is what comes across the whole of this double cd pack.

However I do feel that maybe the title is a bit misleading: this is not a CD of "classic tunes" you might hear wandering around the Big Chill site necessarily - so no "Les Fleur" or "New Day" or even "Get a Move On" - this is Mr Scruffs view of the music that sums up the festival, it's his "classics" for the Big Chill, and that's where this really succeeds - if you ever want to get inside Mr Scruff's head while he's walking around the site, or playing one of his memorable sets, or hosting his Big Chill radio show or even when he's serving tea then this is the CD that will do it for you. And, in the near future, I feel it will become a classic in it's own right.
