John Rixon introduces The Big Chill’s unique lineup
of VJs...
I’m really excited to announce the inclusion of Fata Morgana to our VJ line-up. Their amazing work combines analogue and digital techniques. In their own words...
We primarily use 8mm cine film projectors and other vintage electronics to create organic visuals which we process and project with new technologies producing a synergy of old and new.
We take old home movies sourced from house clearances cross the country and, working directly on the film surface, alter them by scratching, burning and drawing on them. We mix 4 projections over each other and use a live camera feed to digitise the images to allow them to be mixed with other diagnostic electronics such as a vectorscope and waveform monitor.
We also mix this with the audio waveform of the music we are playing to, obtained using the same live camera feed technique."
From bed sheets and slide projectors to L.E.D. video walls, The Big Chill has embraced them all. Pioneers of today’s VJ scene, Matt Black and Hexstatic, were involved from the outset and are still regulars in the line-up. Visuals have always played a big part in making this festival a little different from the rest. Rather than being an add-on, they are integrated into the whole event.
Walking around at night-time is a veritable feast of colour and light, with a diverse range of artists on show, there is always going to be something that will catch your eye.
As we are always looking for diversity, our VJs come from many backgrounds - filmmakers, animators, graffiti artists, graphic designers, and the style and techniques range from state-of-the-art digital to a wooden shelf with Super 8 projectors bolted to it!
A couple of years ago, a bunch of young lads turned up at my house in Suffolk in a taxi on a Sunday morning with a small package. Turned out they’d come from London to deliver their demo DVD in time for Monday’s deadline! I opened it really hoping the work was going to be good. I need not have worried: it was some of the most refreshing work I’d seen and I booked them there and then. They are Windowseat, and have been on my VJ wish list ever since.
Now we have them at Eastnor 2007. They use a combination of Super 8, 35mm slides and digital video to create beautiful montages of still and moving imagery - look out for them!
Anybody who caught Lambchop’s stunning set at Eastnor last year will remember the work of Habibajeffe aka Simon Wild. He combines his illustration and printmaking work with video and animation to form complex, beautiful worlds of colour and texture. Much of his content is hand-drawn, in
marked contrast to themajority of VJswork, having just
completed his Master’s in children’s book illustration.
This extraordinary young artist has a unique style and way of seeing things, exactly the type of VJ you’ll find at The Big Chill: eclectic, diverse and adventurous.
