D-fuse

Widely recognised as pioneers of contemporary VJ culture, D-Fuse is a group of artists and designers exploring the relationship between image and sound across a range of creative media, from art and architecture to live A/V performances, mobile media, web, print, TV and film, collaborating with a wide variety of musicians, from electronic artists Scanner and Beck, to contemporary classical composer Steve Reich.


Founded by Michael Faulkner in the mid 1990s + based in London, D-Fuse is a collective that unites international visual + audio artists whose output spans from communicating ideas to time based art + architecture; live A/V performances to Mobile Media, Web, print, TV + film. D-Fuse has continuously expanded the universe of possibilities of digital art and discourse through their desire to experiment + develop a unique language for the needs of the digital world. Their work commonly encourages the viewer to reflect on the process of experiencing art in a multi-dimensional, multi-sensory way + especially the key relationship between sound + image. 2005 was a groundbreaking year for D-Fuse. Celebrated Grammy Award winner Beck commissioned D-Fuse to interpret his Guero album + create over 30 organic textural movies + vision-scapes. An world-wide tour shortly followed, during which D-Fuse created a unique mix for each show, responding to Beck’s music in real time.

D-Fuse's visual art has been seen + screened internationally at events including: Sonar [Barcelona], onedotzero festivals, Nokia Lab [St Petersburg + Moscow],
Mori Arts Centre [Tokyo], Eyebeam [NYC], San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Prix Ars Electronica [Linz], the Rotterdam + Seoul Film Festivals, Lisbon + Valencia Biennales + Rio de Janeiro International Short Film Festival, Siggraph 06 Art Show [Boston] + many more.

The D-Fuse book, A/V: Audio-Visual Art + VJ Culture, will be published by Laurence King in September 2006. It includes features on a wide range of international VJs + visual artists, graphic spreads of visuals, film stills, + photography, along with articles by leading contributors in the field. It will be accompanied by a free DVD offering samples of artists’ work in documentary, live + video forms. Contributors incl. Scanner, Elliott Earls + Adrian Shaughnessy.


Current Projects ¬
Supported by Al Gore, SOS has commissioned 50 award-winning filmmakers from a variety of backgrounds, to create provocative shorts designed to trigger a mass-scale movement to combat the climate crisis. The films range in tone from factual + dramatic to fictional + comedic. Filmmakers incl.Madonna, Joaquin Phoenix, Chad Lowe, Roman Coppola, Casey Affleck, Amy Berg, Rob Reiner, Sophie Muller, Roman Coppola, Airside + D-Fuse.

Climate change, + what ordinary people can do about it, is the subject of a series of 5 x 40-second films from D-Fuse. Under the general title Carbon Crisis, each blipvert focuses on 1 cause of C02 emissions - #1 Cars, #2 Power, #3 Rubbish, #4 Aviation + #5 Deforestation + will be shown as part of Live Earth on 7 July. This series of concerts around the world is expected to reach an audience of 2 billion people.

"We wanted to not only make people aware of terrible things that are happening to our planet, but let them know how easy it is to make a difference," Michael Faulkner "too often you are given these depressing statistics and feel that the situation is hopeless and there is nothing you can do about it. We wanted to challenge that idea."

7 of the SOS films [incl. D-Fuse film Carbon Crisis #5 Deforestation] were premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival, NYC + are currently screening on Italian MTV. In fact the D-Fuse film Carbon Crisis #5 Deforestation made such an impact at its Tribeca screening that Al Gore has used it in his Inconvenient Truth presentations. Meanwhile, last week the LA Film Festival screened the entire collection of SOS films.

The Carbon Crisis films were put together with the help of The Guardian Environmental writer Dominic Murphy, Greenpeace, Professor Daniel Dorling at the University of Sheffield + the Worldmapper project.
