Afri-kokoa
Afri-kokoa is a London-based monthly art-club reflective of the cultural collisions of Africa and its Diaspora as expressed in London-culture; ranging from art, music, poetry, storytelling and dance to painting, film, fashion and craft. Afri-kokoa aims to develop a forum for collective creativity that encourages participation and collaboration between artists and audience.Original artists who have performed at Afri-kokoa include Afro-dance queen ‘Wunmi’,
spoken-wordist and singer-songwriter Ife Piankhi, singer-performer and teacher Randolph Matthews, singer-songwriters Mpho Skeef, Cleveland Watkiss and Dragonfly as well award winning trumpeter Byron Wallen. All Afri-kokoa performances are one-off originals.
Resident DJs AJ Kwame and Baggy plus special guests continually explore the universal sounds of new and old Afro musical fusions, from Hip-Life to Broken Beat, African Hip- Hop to Afro-Eurasian grooves, Reggaeton to Bashment and Beat Poetry to Grime, Dubstep to House.
Artistic works are provided by resident artist Erin Sorensen and guest with visuals and film installation by Bugfunk. Handmade arts & crafts display and stall by Senga Design (www.sengakdesign.co.uk/), hat stalls, record stalls and more feature.
Always the key aim is to create opportunities and ideas that allow the community attending to become the art they witness and play a part in its creation.
