Cookshop Records - An Interview

Cookshop Records - An Interview

Who are ya?

We are Cookshop, a Brighton based record label and collective of musical misfits hell bent on keeping an open-minded ethos alive and well within our musical output. For us it’s as simple as if we like it, we release it regardless of current fashion or formula. In our five year existence we’ve unleashed psychedelic electronic nuggets by Lost Idol, glitched-up disco tracks by Digital Midgets, humour bound electronica by Jonathan Krisp and off kilter drum n’ bass by La Femme as well as supporting other new and inspiring artists on our Taster EP series. Add to that remixes for the label by folk such as Hint, Flevans, Dr Rubberfunk and Hexstatic, you get the picture!

What's your night called?

Sounds Like Science.

What have you been up to, before this?

We released the Lost Idol album Utters From A Cluttered Mind to great critical acclaim late last year, and have just released the debut album by electronic maverick Jonathan Krisp, the cheekily titled No Horse, No Wife, No Moustache. We’re now gearing up for a slew of Lost Idol live gigs, plus a debut DJ slot at this years Big Chill Festival.

What's the music policy for your night?

No policies! Just good honest live music from Nylon Rhythm Machine and Lost Idol plus Digital Midgets and La Femme playing some choice selections in between.

Who has played, or is going to play?

We have live sets from both Lost Idol and Nylon Rhythm Machine. Lost Idol will be utilizing a laptop, vocal loops, decks, guitars and plenty of fx alongside live drums and percussion to recreate the melancholic beauty of his recorded work, meanwhile ex-Catskills stalwart Nylon Rhythm Machine, known for his trademark sound of lazy beats and exquisite acoustic guitar picking, will be joined onstage by guests including UK DMC winner JFB on beats/scratches and Sophie Faricy (Bonobo/TM Juke) on vocal duties. Label honch La Femme and Solid Steel (Ninja Tune) favourite Digital Midgets will also be on hand to play some records too.

If money was no object, and you could book any line-up of DJs and bands living or dead, who would play?

Right well we’d need to perform some miracles but how about Syd-Barrett-era Pink Floyd (replete with oil projection lightshow), The Beach Boys performing Smile, and Boards Of Canada live with John Peel on DJ duties.

What are your current top 5 tunes?

Can we opt for 5 albums?
1. Kettel - Whisper Me Wishes (Clone)
2. Various Artists - Jonny Trunk presents…Now We Are Ten (Trunk)
3. Jonathan Krisp - No Horse, No Wife, No Moustache (Cookshop)
4. Pepe Deluxe - Spare Time Machine (Catskills)
5. Christ. - Blue Shift Emissions (Benbecula)

What three things would your ideal bar have to have?

Nice people, strong liquor, good music.

I'm just on my way to the bar - what I get you?

Another drink please.

Ideal evening chilling at home?

Good company and fine wine always does the trick.

Ideal evening chilling out?

The best nights out are always unplanned. Just hit the town and see where the evening takes you.

Favourite places?

We recently found ourselves on a beach in Tofino, a very secluded village on the corner of Vancouver Island, Canada. Behind us was rainforest, in front of us just blue sea stretching as far as the eye could see. It was the most tranquil and inspiring place we’ve ever been to.

What are you reading these days?

These questions. Sadly we don’t get enough time to get our heads in books these days.

What are you working on at present?

We our working on our forthcoming Soundbites Vol.2 compilation album which is sounding terrific and we’re very excited about. Plus putting on our Sounds Like Science nights on in Brighton inviting other acts we like down to play live such as Christ., Tomcats In Tokyo, Dextro and LJ Kruzer.

What would most like to achieve over the next five years?

Apart from putting on the imaginary dream gig we talked about above, we’d just like to hope we’re still around making and releasing music in another 5 years time.

Highlight of your life?

Just being alive is pretty special!

At a festival - tent, B&B, or hotel for you, and why?

It’s gotta be a tent every time! You can’t beat a bit of confused drunken tent-erecting in the middle of a soggy field, it’s all part of the festival experience!

What was your Top Big Chill moment?

This year’s our first time, so we’ll report back in a couple of weeks!

Describe the essence of The Big Chill in a few words...
Life is just one big chill; relax and take time to appreciate the beautiful things that surround you.

When are you on next?
Lots of Lost Idol live gigs coming up around the UK, plus a Cookshop DJ night every Tuesday at the Arthouse in Brighton.
