Who are ya?
Neil Thornton aka The Ravemaster General
What's your night called?
Lasermagnetic
What have you been up to, before this?
Just got back from our Lasermagnetic Disco Party weekend in Paris plus too much digging for vinyl over there - all good though!
What's the music policy for your night?
Well plenty of disco of course :) plus Balearica, deep house, old Chicago stuff, plus my partner in crime Johnny Chingas is partial to playing
lots of cosmic, progressive rock stuff. Basically music to get girls dancing and the boys following.
Who has played, or is going to play?
Lindstrom, Prins Thomas, Brennan Green, Danny Wang, I.f, Dennis Kane from NYC, Thomas from Rub N Tug, Idjut Boys, Metro Area, Reverso 68, Losoul, Faze Action, Gerry Rooney…basically a lot of the guys really pushing the current disco scene.
Future guests include Romain BNO (Paris), Spacid (Belgium). We are always scouting overseas an for exciting guests.
If money was no object, and you could book any line-up of DJs and bands living or dead, who would play?
Ron Hardy & Larry Levan, and Bepe Loda 3 DJ’s/ pioneers from late 70’s/80’s (Bepe is playing again now so watch this space), each with a different slant, with Grace Jones on vocal duty - that would be some disco!!!
What are your current top 5 tunes?
Faze Action - Disco Warrior
Dirty Haze - Beat to Def EP
Lee Douglas - New York Story
Beat Broker - Light up the Night
Junior Boys - Under the Sun 2007 Re-version
What three things would your ideal bar have to have?
A very good sound-system - not too loud just nice and clear to hear the sexy disco.
A Bar Tender who makes great cocktails
The bunch of Parisian girls we met last weekend - Oh la la!!
I'm just on my way to the bar - what I get you?
Pina Coladas would suit me fine thank you, excellent!!
Ideal evening chilling at home?
A good bottle of red, a good book and some soothing sounds or a good film.
Ideal evening chilling out?
Dinner with friends, or a nice stroll in the countryside followed, by a cold pint of Cider.
Favourite places?
Paris without fail, Rottterdam at night, Ghent in Belgium, and Epping Forest for walking.
What are you reading these days?
‘Confessions of a Groupie’ (Pamela Des Barres) - there’s a fantastic article on Don Johnson - I think the ladies might like to read this piece ;)
What are you working on at present?
Pushing the Lasermagnetic brand with Mr. Johnny Chingas, Carnival weekend, organising the Discosound clash tour. Some ideas for a compilation. The various residencies we have. Starting to think about Christmas and NYE events.
What would most like to achieve over the next five years?
Hopefully carrying on what we are doing at the moment; playing the music we love, working on the label, pushing disco to new audiences and still having as much fun as we are having at the moment.
Highlight of your life?
Spending precious times with my grandfather when I was younger. Lots of great times have been had. From a musical slant, it was fun playing music to Larry Heard and Robert Owens the other week in a restaurant of all places.
At a festival - tent, B&B, or hotel for you, and why?
Tough one as I love hotels & B&B's, but playing last year at The Big Chill was certainly a night we will never forget…actually it was such a great weekend, meeting so many new friends.
What was your Top Big Chill moment?
Playing last year on the Village Green Stage just before Bent and looking out and seeing all our friends and some of them getting a bit too excited (in a good way) and invading the stage to dance.
Describe the essence of The Big Chill in a few words...
A melting pot of great music and like-minded people.
