Shuttle

Resident Shuttle DJ Shur-i-kan is one of house music's most respected producers, and records for Freerange Records (recently voted DJ magazine's best british label) as well highly respected imprints such as NRK, Z Records and Slip'n'Slide. Shuttle is fast establishing itself as one of London's premier nights for deep underground house music with top quality guest DJ's and upcoming talent.

As this bi-monthly night prepares for another mission at The Big Chill House on Saturday August 18th, Shur-i-kan takes 5 minutes to answer a few questions about the Shuttle ethos...

Who are ya?

Tom Szirtes aka Shur-I-kan

What's your night called?

Shuttle

What have you been up to, before this?

I’ve been producing and DJing for quite a number of years now - best known for my albums and house music releases on Freerange Records and remixes for NRK and Z Records. I’ve worked with them all I can tell ya guv. I also do my bit to speed up climate change by Djing here, there and everywhere.

What's the music policy for your night?

We start the night off with just some hip-hop and funk just to get warmed up but from 11pm it’s simply the absolute finest contemporary quality underground house music we can lay our hands on. It’s deep, musical and jackin - lush music for the mind and body.

Who has played, or is going to play?

Previous guests have been D’Nell (BBE), Christian Larson from Slip’n’Slide records, Schmoov! and Milton Jackson. In August we are having Nathan Boddy aka Office Gossip playing for us.

If money was no object, and you could book any line-up of DJs and bands living or dead, who would play?

Ooo… toughy… a triple bill of Prince, The Police and Miles Davis with Kerri Chandler warming up on decks.

What are your current top 5 tunes?

I’m going to try and break with DJ tradition and actually list tunes you can buy as opposed to tracks that won’t be out for years…

Sandboy and Nanar - Night Song (Yoruba Soul Mix)
DJ Disciple - Rise up (Funky Minimal Mix)
DJ Le Roi - I Get Deep
Fred Everything - I Want Chu (Hipp-e Mix)
Tim Fuller - Show Me Right (Spirit Catcher Mix)

What three things would your ideal bar have to have?

A personal volume control, an ejector mechanism under every seat and an unlimited tab for myself.

I'm just on my way to the bar - what I get you?

Dark Rum and Coke please, easy on the coke.

Ideal evening chilling at home?

My laptop, a bottle of fine wine and the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleading team.

Ideal evening chilling out?

A spade, two hundred feet of Gaffa tape and the cast of Big Brother in the back of a transit van.

Favourite places?

Toyko, New York and Sommerfield car park in Sudbury.

What are you reading these days?

Nothing just at the moment (other than Sound On Sound magazine on the bog) but just finished reading my grandfather’s autobiography - he’s 100 years old and spent many years being a missionary and army officer in Asia. Fascinating stuff indeed.

What are you working on at present?

Been writing some more music for various house labels. Travelling a lot with the Djing, playing with the Bays and Tom Middleton. Oh yeah and producing/remixing some pop records! Rushed off my poor little fingers.

What would most like to achieve over the next five years?

To be five years older.

Highlight of your life?

This interview and riding Cheryl Baker bareback across the Andes.

At a festival - tent, B&B, or hotel for you, and why?

Tent in a B&B room so I can pretend I’m slumming it.

What was your Top Big Chill moment?

Djing with Jimpster and Palmskin at the Strongbow Bar back in 2004 I think… we rocked.

Describe the essence of The Big Chill in a few words...

…flying naked through the mountains of Tibet in the evening sun on the back of a giant Griffon.

When are you on next?

Playing with Tom Middleton on Saturday at Eastnor. Then 18th August at the Big Chill House for Shuttle - come down if you dare!
