Kathy Diamond - An Interview
Kathy Diamond kindly took some time to answer a few questions for bigchill.net after performing at Eastnor this year...Kathy Diamond what a fabulous name! Is it your real name?
Ha ha, yes it is…my real name, ha ha!
That was a lovely set, did you enjoy doing it?
It was great - lots of people to dance with - great weather, lovely festival!
Are you doing any other festivals or gigs this year?
With underground music, you get booked for PA’s. I’m not on a major label, so I’ve not got a big tour. I was offered Glastonbury but had to turn it down because I was already booked for a festival in Poland.
You turned down Glastonbury? Did it ever cross your mind to cancel the Polish gig?
No, not at all, I think you’ve got to be real. You can’t let people down - you’ve got to be good!
I think that’s a nice attitude that you don’t see everywhere.
Ok well it did actually cross my mind for a fleeting moment!! Because one of my friends is a friend of Paul Weller, and he was playing, and I had tickets to go backstage and I was just ‘oh I wanna go but no I’ve got to go to Poland’. But you know the people there were absolutely amazing.
Were they? Tell me more...
Oh it was brilliant, the people really put their all into promoting clubs and stuff. You’ve just got to do it.
So is there anything you want to see at the Big Chill this weekend?
I really just want to see Isaac Hayes. I just want to go and sit at the front of the stage and stare at him.
Stare at his salty balls?
Weeell I’ll probably just stare into his eyes and go ‘oooh’. He reminds me of my mum playing records……
So have you got any favourite tunes? Is that putting you on the spot?
Oh my god!
Well they don’t have to be your absolute favourites and we won’t hold you to them!
I don’t know...I’d just like an Isaac Hayes mega-mix. Heh Heh - Nicely got out of eh?
Yes, very slick!
I’d like to see Donna Summer here actually - I think she’d rock it. She should be absolutely back right now. She’s my hotspot I’m going to make it a mission to get her back on the planet. She’s probably chilling out in Malibu or something. Time to come out of retirement Donna!
You’ve just done a live PA with Soft Rocks recordings but are you writing or producing yourself at the moment?
Yes I have a new album just out its called Miss Diamond to You
What can we expect from that?
Well it’s produced by Maurice Fulton who’s a great disco-house remix producer so expect some of his influences!
Any reviews out? What have they been like?
They’ve been brilliant - I’m so lucky - I’m not a big artist in the conventional sense but Rumor an Italian magazine and XLR8r an American one gave it excellent reviews. Stylus which is an online magazine also gave it a good shout.
I’ve heard you described as the diva standard-bearer of the disco movement - how does that sit with you?
Oh that’s lovely of course, and apparently I’m ‘big on the gay scene’ which isn’t that surprising. Just now as I was singing I noticed a couple of guys out there dancing who I thought might be some gay and you know, I could really dance with them and vamp it up and flirt because nobody’s going to think anything about that. I love it!
Thank you so much for chatting to me; enjoy the rest of your festival.
No thank you, have a brilliant one yourself
