Selected by John Fordham (Guardian) as 'ones to watch for in 2008', Portico Quartet are four young musicians based in London.
Nick Mulvey, Duncan Bellamy, Jack Wyllie and Milo Fitzpatrick met in 2005 as they began studying in London. Comprised of soprano Saxophone (Wyllie), double bass (Fitzpatrick), Hang and percussion (Mulvey), and drums and Hang (Bellamy), their sound is truly unique, exciting and fresh.
Forging contemporary jazz with modern classical tendencies (think Steve Reich and Philip Glass) along with many other genres, they have created an inimitable sound that has been compared to the work of Ben Allison, Esbjorn Svennson Trio and The Cinematic Orchestra amongst many others.
After nearly two years of playing mainly small gigs and busking regularly outside the National Theatre in London, they signed to Babel Label in 2007. Their first album, Knee-deep in the North Sea was released on 5th November 2007, to critical acclaim, including a nomination in Gilles Peterson's Worldwide Awards 2007, which they followed up by peforming at the awards ceremony in January 2008.
Portico Quartet recently recorded a session for Gilles Peterson's Radio 1 Worldwide show, Radio 4 Front Row and a live number for Robert Elms' feature on the 2007 London Jazz Festival on Radio London.
