The Light Surgeons
The Light Surgeons perform their lastest A/V show, True Fictions, at The Big Chill festival 2008 A-Z line up | Ticket infoThe Light Surgeons operates as a multi media production company from a base in east London, producing a wide variety of creative projects from the commercial to artist lead.
Their work spans many diverse mediums; print, photography, motion graphics, short films, exhibitions and installations. Over the past ten years they have helped to pioneer new forms of cross platform practice, particularly with their audio visual performances, expanded cinema projects and installations.
With their live performance projects they have developed a form of audiovisual journalism that fuses music and storytelling by way of recorded interviews and fragmented narratives in combination with improvised live manipulation of video.

True Fictions: new adventures in folklore
"“True Fictions" is an exploration of truth and myth through the voices and music of New Yorkers.
Starting from the sleepy town of Troy, The Light Surgeons set out investigating the stories and myths surrounding the bearded idol and personification of the United States, Uncle Sam Wilson.
Through this web of documentary narratives the story expands with interviews with historical re-enactors and Native Americans from the Seneca and Mohawk tribes.
Their nomadic travels take them on a journey around the state of New York, collecting opposing views and tangled conspiracies from the 5th anniversary of 911 and in heart of New York City.
The plurality of voices form a rich tapestry, peeling away the layers of histories, folklore and archetypes and revealing how these cultural constructs become the blurred and often hijacked for different causes or political ideals.
An original audio visual score was generated for this project through a series of video and recording sessions in New York City with a group of unsigned artists collected through the Internet. Taking inspiration from the Dadaist game of Exquisite Corpse, each collaborating artist was invited to react to a previous recording; in this way a series of musical rumors were generated and the source material for the various audio visual tracks was created.
The final result is a true fusion of different musical genres, classical, electronic, folk and hip-hop are spliced together creating a live performance that brings all these musical and narrative elements together on stage as a kaleidoscopic multi screen cinematic experience, incorporating live musicians, electronic music, animation and motion graphics and cutting edge audio visual manipulations.
