Film Programme

Film Programme

A special treat for early birds at this year's festival, as the Moonlit Picture House, Media Mix Tent, and Castle Stage power up their screens, and show films from the quality packed festival film programme on Thursday evening.

Already confirmed are...

In Search of a Midnight Kiss
In Search of a Midnight Kiss (2007) is an independent comedy from the producer of Dazed and Confused, and Before Sunset, Anne Walker. Directed by award-winning comic filmmaker, Alex Holdridge.

In Search of a Midnight Kiss is a rollicking comic ride and tender journey though love, sex, and modern romance in Los Angeles on New Year's Eve... In the waning hours of the year, emotional vulnerability and bitterly honest humor seem to be waiting around every corner. Official selection of some of the biggest international film festivals in 2007

Flight of the Red Balloon
2007 film by Hou Hsiao Hsien, inspired by Lamorisse’s 1950s childhood classic The Red Balloon - also showing at the Big Chill, along with The White Mane (thanks to the BFI). Starring Juliette Binoche. Opened the Un Certain Regard section at Cannes 2007.

Blame it on Fidel
The fiercely logical Anna lives a comfortable life in early 1970s Paris with her French journalist mother and Spanish lawyer father, until her life is turned upside down when her parents become political activists and she finds herself shifted to a cramped apartment where strange, bearded revolutionaries turn up during the night. A charming and thoughtful film, the first drama from documentary director Julie Gavras.

"...terrific debut." **** The Guardian

"A smashing, funny and politically sophisticated feature debut" The Daily Telegraph
"...deft, original, entertaining..." **** Time Out

I for India
Sandhya Suri's absorbing 2007 debut feature is a sensitive and intimate slice of life, blending old home movies with archival footage to document her family's life since their move from India to England in 1965. Shot over 40 years, the Super-8 footage filmed by Suri's father in Darlington and their family back in India unravels as a deeply emotional story of separation and loss. A time capsule of alienation, discovery, racism and belonging, I for India is a chronicle of immigration in 1960s Britain and beyond.

"A compelling piece of social history that is also a deeply moving domestic melodrama. ****" Empire
"Penetrating and powerful." Total Film
"A miraculous mini-epic... terrifically warm, watchable film-making. ****" The Guardian

Garbage Warrior
What do beer cans, car tires and water bottles have in common? Not much unless you're renegade architect Michael Reynolds, in which case they are tools of choice for producing thermal mass and energy-independent housing. For 30 years New Mexico-based Reynolds and his green disciples have devoted their time to advancing the art of "Earthship Biotecture" by building self-sufficient, off-the-grid communities where design and function converge in eco-harmony. However, these experimental structures that defy state standards create conflict between Reynolds and the authorities, who are backed by big business. Frustrated by antiquated legislation, Reynolds lobbies for the right to create a sustainable living test site. While politicians hum and ha, Mother Nature strikes, leaving communities devastated by tsunamis and hurricanes. Reynolds and his crew seize the opportunity to lend their pioneering skills to those who need it most. Shot over three years and in four countries, Garbage Warrior is a timely portrait of a determined visionary, a hero of the 21st century.

Gypsy Caravan
A dazzling documentary celebrating the musical world of the Roma, showcasing the work of top international Gypsy performers and interweaving tales of their home life and history. Filmed, sometimes by documentary icon Albert Maysles, in Spain, Macedonia, Romania and India, with footage from the Gypsy Caravan Tour of Europe and America.

"Foot-stomping evidence of the diversity and connectedness of the vital Roma musical tradition." Time Out
"What you've believed about these people has been a lie your entire life." Johnny Depp

Heima
'Heima' is Sigur Rós's first ever film, filmed over two weeks in summer when the band undertook a series of free, unannounced concerts in Iceland. They traveled round 15 locations to the furthest flung corners of their homeland for their debut venture into live film, to create something inspirational. On their way they went to ghost towns, outsider art shrines, national parks, small community halls and the absolute middle-of-nowhere-ness of the highland wilderness, as well as playing the largest gig of their career (and in Icelandic history) at their homecoming Reykjavik show.
