Si Armstrong is resident DJ and co-promoter for Friends and Family, the legendary and notoriously diverse club night with outposts in Manchester, London, Barcelona, Zurich and Oslo.
He can be found at Friends and Family at Cargo, London every month and also playing madcap six hour sets at Keep Left, his monthly bar session in Shoreditch, London. Si regularly plays as a guest DJ around the UK, Europe and beyond.
A vinyl junkie since early 80's, Simon's lifetime love affair with hip hop and dance music is now expressed through beat heavy, percussive DJ sets with "more hooks and loops than a Velcro fastener". Good time party music for all the friends of the family!
A hip hop kid at school, who then discovered acid house and all night raves in '89, by the time Simon was in his late teens, he was a heavy user of jazz, soul, disco, boogie, funk, techno, reggae, electronica - everything and anything. Through the nineties, he preferred to play the back-rooms of clubs, or smaller venues and after parties where a more intimate setting allowed music and experimentation to be the primary focus.
"I have no interest in commercial music or popular culture per se, I'm interested in discovering great, honest music and bringing it to a wider audience. There are so many incredible tracks around, just hovering under the radar - new or old, it's my job as a DJ to make sure they are found, played and enjoyed rather than forgotten. I don't play music by successful crossover artists as they no longer need any support, they've made it through- the small, broke people doing it just for the music and the good times is where it's at for me!"
So, expect to hear heartfelt electronic soul music, jazzy beats and rolling bass-lines, but little straight up hip hop; "Hip hop to me is like a psycho ex-girlfriend - we split up years ago because she cheated on me and took all my money. I hate pretty much everything she does these days; the way she looks, her voice, her attitude, but somewhere deep down, I think I still love her."
