REVIEWS

In a club culture that celebrates larging it, people who lie back to find their musical highs are proper lightweights. And very happy, tanned lightweights too, to judge by the number of times 'sunshine' is invoked in
this collection. Well, what else is your garden / living room for if not chillin in? Nearly all 30 tunes on this double CD pack are twenty-first century, and it's a set that's cushioned on various floaty, folky, worldy, ambient-y and summertime-and-the-living-is-easy grooves.

The Big Chill's Pete Lawrence has selected his fave grooves and there are loads of treats here, not least Fontella Bass' soul-wrenching vocal on Cinematic Orchestra's 'All That You Give'. Badmarsh and Shri's equally emotive sitar instrumental 'Appa'. Ashley Slater's 'Private Sunshine' and Nature Boy's 'Lessons In Love', but there are many more. So go get it!

Dave Swindells, Time Out

Now that Glastonbury's original spirit is somewhat obscured by burger vans, litter bonfires and nu-metal bands, The Big Chill has become the new bastion of spirituality and trying to get a shag by threading flowers in the hair of impressionable hippy lasses.

How much this appeals probably depends on whether you value incense and astral charts as much as relaxation, for the artists showcased on the latest compilation have all pitched their tents in the camp marked 'cosmic'.

But the low temperature treats on offer here, be it the folky whimsy of Kirsty Hawkshaw or the glimmering ambience of Boomclick, all have undeniable if disparate forms of beauty and grace. Now, would you like a flake with that, love?

Paul Clarke, DJ magazine

From outdoor festivals to club nights worldwide, The Big Chill set-up has won a lot of friends. This 2CD set shows why. All manner of soul, folk and jazz have been brought into creative play; the joyous sax and piano of Bushy's ska-influenced Soz, the guitar house of Boomclick's Sights, and the brazillian beat of Mr Hermano. About as uplifting as downtempo gets.
