Future Loop Foundation - Scratch & Sniff Ep (louisiana Records)
Currently only available on 10-inch vinyl, Future Loop Foundation aka Mark Barrott's latest release is a very fragrant affair. You see, the sleeve is proper old school scratch 'n' sniff featuring the flavours of vanilla ice cream, freshly cut grass and bubblegum. These summery scents are a clue to what lies inside on the cold black disc. Using the voice of the Mr Kipling adverts (Roger Hammond) Future Loop Foundation has produced a trio of tracks that are perfect for listening too on a late summer evening.Opener ' A Very English Summer' is so close to the pastoral and gentle electronic relaxation of Lemon Jelly that it could almost be, as a famous downtempo DJ said to me recently, the same duo under a different guise. Strawberry Jelly maybe? In fact, Mark Barrott, once of Sheffield, now living in Italy, must be yearning for bit of cricket and warm beer as this track really does convey that sticky heat of August that we get here, when the trees, the grass and the air is so warm that everything is still, heavy and lazy.
'Bakers Dozen' follows down that same path through the tall yellowing grass that the opener has taken you. A little faster and not so laid back, the suns gone down now so it's getting a bit chilly. Meanwhile,'A Very English Mystery' sounds like an outtake from Jackanory or Hectors House, but in reality is just a short little diversion that is designed to get you to crack the simple code enabling you to download 'Slip n Slide', a free track from the web.
A nice little package neatly wrapped up in some groovy, trippy artwork. I loved Future Loop Foundation's last album 'This Is How I feel' released in 2002 so I do hope there will be a follow up soon.
Scratch 'n' Sniff EP is out in late August (but will be made specially available in advance at Eastnor)
